I trained first at Cambridge School of Art and Nottingham College of Art and Design before postgraduate studies at the Slade School of Fine Art, U.C.L., London.
For nine years I lectured at Glasgow School of Art, for some of that time in the famous Mackintosh Building, before I returned to Cambridge to lecturer first in the Technical College and then at Cambridge Regional College.
I greatly enjoyed teaching and throughout that time I practised as a printmaker and mural artist, contributing to exhibitions in U.K., U.S.A. Germany France and Japan.
ExhibitionsIn the 1980s and early 90s I wrote and illustrated two books on the principles of pattern and colour.
Bibliography Both interests remain with me and are applicable to my present professional practise in glass. From 1996 - 99 I retrained in stained glass at Central Saint Martins College of Art.
QualificationsAnd I now take commissions for glass while continuing to print, draw, design and exhibit.
The photo shows me in my present studio which was built by the late Edward Bawden RA, a well known printmaker and artist of the Second World War. Photo by J. K. Clayden, ARPS, 116 Ashdon Road, Saffron Walden, Essex CB10 2AL
Statement
The stunning beauty of glass surpasses the visual qualities of most other artistic media. A large variety of imagery can be transferred in some way to glass, but it must be adapted to exploit the transparency and variability. Technical innovations have never been so extensive as they are today.
Printmaking and glass combine well. I also use hand painting and computer assisted techniques.
If you have a stained glass project which you would like to discuss just contact me as above and we can discuss it. Most of the time I work alone, but commissions often require consultation with builders, architects, parish councilors, engineers etc. and I enjoy working with others.
Glass is site-specific and has to be handled sympathetically with reference to the purpose and appearance of architecture. Light is a key consideration, but so are the wishes and requirements of clients and others who live or work in the buildings concerned.

These terms are a guide only.
Free estimates within reasonable travel. At the artist's discretion. Usually within 60 miles.
The estimate is usually made from preliminary measurements and discussion. It will anticipate the total price of materials, fabrication, transports and installation.
Designs:
May involve computer and/or handcrafted processes. Media: paper, ink, paint or anything suitable. Payment on delivery.
If you are satisfied with the design(s) I will ask you to pay a deposit to cover materials and initial costs. This will be 33% of the estimated price. The remaining 67% will be due after the installation is complete.
Materials:
Glass costs between £15 and £300 per square metre, depending on type. Other materials which may be required include, lead, enamels, acids and so on.
Fabrication
Costs apart from the design, but including everything else, usually fall between £60 and £300 per square foot, depending on detail, complexity and number of processes. This variation is mostly related to the hours required.
You may have an idea of your price range, in which case the initial designs can be made so that the total cost falls within it.
Subcontracting (If required.)
Any work that I cannot do alone will be discussed in advance and charged at cost.
